Hubby and I were actually looking for barbecue in New Haven. But after driving around and around, there was just no trace of what we were looking for (hint: it’s a New Haven-based food truck with barbecue!). We were far from Northern Smoke, while Bear’s Smokehouse was 45 minutes away. We already went to Hoodoo Brown BBQ lately, so that’s a no-go.
With equal parts determination and hunger, I remembered reading about Uncle Willie’s BBQ in Seymour. We got there before 8:30 PM, and they close at 9:00 PM. We thought they wouldn’t welcome us anymore, but we were wrong.
Since I love burnt ends and hubby goes for brisket, it was a no-brainer what to order. There were four sauces to choose from: sweet, hot, vinegar or mustard. I went with sweet, while hubby ended up with vinegar.
Look at my food!

This is hubby’s brisket.

Verdict: Some days, you just want to eat good food without the fuss. No need to be meticulously plated and/or masterfully executed. You just want a hearty and filling meal.
Uncle Willie’s reminded me of Blues Barbecue in Montana. Not because the food tasted the same, but because both places have the same casual and low-key vibe.
Uncle Willie’s is located in a strip mall. It can be easy to miss, but when you do find it, you’ll enjoy generous portions of meat smoked to perfection. Meat so tender, you don’t need a knife to cut it. Come to think of it, it’s a takeout place more than anything. You can easily get your Q on-the-go. Happily, there is nothing sub-par about their food, so this was definitely a delicious discovery.
