Robert Louis Stevenson said it best, “Wine is bottled poetry.” Some days, I just get this thirst to sample new wines. While it’s easy to go to a wine store and purchase different wines, I still enjoy visiting wineries and vineyards and wine tasting. Unfortunately, living in the Northeast and finding year-round wineries and vineyards is a bit challenging. Most are open in spring until fall or early winter. Beyond that, you have to wait until warm weather comes along. Thank goodness for Millbrook Vineyards & Winery in Millbrook, NY!
Hailed by the New York Times as “the Hudson Valley’s flagship winery”, Millbrook Vineyards & Winery is open year-round. Even better, it’s been around since the ’80s, which to me means they’re doing something right.
When we got there, there was a queue of people at the cashier. A winery employee told us to join the line and pay for our tasting fees, which ended up to be $25 for two.
We sampled their wines from Millbrook, NY as well as California and Italy. We also tried their Villa Pillo Tuscan Olive Oil.
After we were finished with the tasting, we headed to the terrace and checked out the views of the vineyard and Catskill Mountains.
Then we went back again to the tasting room just to look around.
I saw these Skinny Signs, but I couldn’t decide which one to buy!
Verdict: What can I say? If you’re in the area, go.
You can choose between two wine tasting options – the Portfolio Wine Tasting ($12.50 per person) and the Reserve Wine Tasting ($25 per person). Do note that Reserve Tastings aren’t available during winter. Anyway, you can also enjoy a guided tour of the winery for a couple of bucks more. During Memorial Day weekend through October, you can eat a delicious meal with wine in their outdoor, tented cafe Vineyard Grille. Right now, they offer Chili Weather Weekends in the Vineyard Taproom. If you’re in the mood to try new wines, spending a lovely afternoon at Millbrook Vineyards & Winery is definitely time well-spent.
As I read somewhere before, “You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy wine and that’s kind of the same thing.”
