Another weekend, another drive to New Jersey to eat at Max’s Restaurant.
When we’ve got a hankering for Filipino food, we head to NJ. They have both Max’s and Red Ribbon, both well-known restaurants in the Philippines. There ARE, of course, plenty of Filipino restaurants in NY and NJ. But I’ve been eating food from Max’s since I was yea high. I even remember going with my mom when she buys fried chicken for take-out. They’ve been around for so long, you can chalk it up to sentimentality as well.
Of course, after moving here to the U.S., it was “so long, Max’s!” The chance of eating their food was slim to none unless we move to California where they have so many branches, or if we go to the Philippines for a visit. Imagine my glee when they finally opened a branch in New Jersey! No drive is too long or too far.
Which led us to go to NJ. I felt like having their pancit canton and sisig. No fried chicken this time.
Pancit canton are egg noodles sauteed with pork, chicken, shrimp and vegetables. Yum!
Lechon Kawali Sisig is diced and seasoned pork belly with onions, pepper and scallions on a sizzling plate. Double yum!
By the way, I put “Max’s Restaurant/Max’s of Manila” in the title of this post because I remember seeing a sign in the NJ branch that said “Max’s of Manila”. I want to make sure that the curious will find their way there, so I’m including both names here.
