Eating Out: Thaipan | Quezon City, Philippines

Tucked away on a quiet part of Sct. Lazcano is Thaipan, an urban fine dining restaurant that serves Thai cuisine.

I went here for the first time with my friend Karen last November. Then I went back here last January with my mom and my sister. Both times, the food and the service were up to par. As for the food, here are the dishes that I tried at Thaipan so far.

Let’s start with this appetizer, Mieng Kham. It’s a traditional Thai appetizer with fresh spices and roasted grated coconut served on betel leaves. You can dip this in the palm sugar sauce. It was my first time to taste betel leaves.

Then we had Pandan Chicken. It’s marinated chicken fillet wrapped in pandan leaves. You can dip it in sweet chili sauce.

Beef Panang has beef tenderloin in fragrant panang curry sauce.

I can never say no to Sticky Rice with Mango! It’s sweetened sticky rice paired with mango slices and fresh coconut cream

During my second visit to Thaipan, my family shared this Morning Glory with Crispy Pork. They stir-fried the leaves in oyster sauce then topped it with crispy pork.

Beef Rendang had tenderloin with Malay rendang sauce.

Their Steamed Fish was steamed in lime, lemongrass and ginger sauce.

Verdict: This immaculate restaurant is an unusual find. Its inviting interior is professionally decorated with designer touches. Upon entering the restaurant, it’s hard to miss its roots as a house converted into a restaurant. I found the light fixtures particularly lovely, a perfect match to the relaxed and casual ambiance.

Thaipan’s location is pretty secluded despite its proximity to Tomas Morato. Parking is pretty limited. The first time I went there, I didn’t bring a car. The second time, luckily, I found a parking space easily enough. The first time I went there, I thought their service was friendly and enthusiastic. As it turns, they also had a pretty good memory. During my second visit, I was surprised to learn that the servers remembered me from my earlier visit.

If you enjoy food with a burst of flavor that engages your senses, then Thai food is for you. Their food was packed with flavor and portioned for sharing. The place is perfect whether you’re out on a date or with a group, especially when you go there for dinner.

It’s one of the best places for fine Thai food in Quezon City. Go there if you like Thai food!
