If you ever find yourself in California’s Monterey County, then make sure that you stop by The Steinbeck House in Salinas, CA.
Steinbeck is, of course, John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. of the famous novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939).
While touring the National Steinbeck Center with my in-laws back in April, the docent told us that Steinbeck’s childhood home was just two blocks away from the center. Naturally, we had to see it for ourselves. Thankfully, it’s pretty hard to miss.
John Steinbeck was born and grew up in this Queen Anne-style Victorian house. Built in 1897, the Steinbeck family moved into this house in 1900.
This house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
While inside, you’ll see Steinbeck family pictures and memorabilia.
We weren’t planning to eat at the restaurant. We wanted to see the house and then go our merry way. But we were there and it seems silly not to go in and have a look, and even sillier not to try their food.
Volunteers of The Valley Guild operate the house. According to their website:
“The Valley Guild was formed by eight enthusiastic women who shared a common interest in gourmet cooking and wanted to showcase Salinas Valley produce. The volunteers of Valley Guild purchased and renovated the house. It was opened to the public as a restaurant on February 27, 1974 —the 72nd anniversary of John Steinbeck’s birth. The house is operated by volunteers with a minimum of paid staff, and recently celebrated its 42nd Anniversary.”
They serve lunch from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
The menu changes, so what we ate during our visit might not be the same thing you’ll find if and when you visit.
Our meal started with these lovely rolls.
Hubby’s order came with a choice of soup or salad. He opted for this Confetti Soup.
This is his entrée: Asparagus and Ham Timbale.
I chose their Chicken, Apple and Brie Sandwich.
My mother-in-law and sister-in-law shared this Philly Cheese Steak.
Of course, a meal wouldn’t be complete without a group picture!
Unfortunately, we were too full to try their desserts. Imagine, we said no to Lemon Bundt Cake with Strawberries, Crème Brûlée and Frozen Chocolate Charlotte!
After eating, we briefly toured the first floor of the house and even saw the room where John Steinbeck was born. We also checked out The Best Cellar Gift Shop in the basement of the house.
Verdict: I am easily charmed by places that are quaint and historical, so this one definitely fits the bill.
Their very friendly and hospitable volunteers wore period costumes and shared a lot of Steinbeck family trivia, which made the experience all the more delightful. While we merely walked in and got seated immediately, I understand that it’s best to make your reservations.
Not only do they combine history and literature, but there’s also food in the mix. This makes The Steinbeck House Restaurant a perfect must-visit if you’re in the area.
