Today’s Thursday, so it’s a good time for a throwback post.
Here’s Aloha Hawaiian Barbecue in Salinas, CA. We went here back in April. I meant to post about it earlier, but it got pushed to the back burner. It’s located across from the Salinas Sports Complex in Sherwood Gardens. We’ve eaten here twice. It’s still pretty good value for your money.
Of course we chose “Hawaiian Sun” tropical drinks! 🙂
We ordered their Plate Lunches. According to their website:
A ‘Plate Lunch’ is a classic Hawaiian meal composed of Asian and Islander dishes (chicken katsu, BBQ chicken, kalbi short ribs, Mahi Mahi, etc) supplemented with the best American and Asian side dishes (macaroni salad and steamed rice). It is the de facto meal of choice in Hawaii and the truest representation of the blend of cuisine and multi-cultures found in Hawaii.
Here’s my food – Loco Moco! It’s got white rice topped with a hamburger patty, a fried egg and brown gravy.
Hubby had their Hawaiian BBQ Short Ribs.
Verdict: We haven’t been to Hawaii, so I can’t confirm the food’s authenticity yet. But I feel like it’s a good introduction to Hawaiian cuisine. At the very least, we get to taste Hawaiian food while being in the mainland.
Still to try:
- Hawaiian Ice Cream – Macadamia Nut, Kalua, Mango, Green Tea, Lychee Nut, Coconut Pineapple, Vanilla, Mintchip
- Saimin – either the Grilled Spam Saimin, Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Saimin, Chicken Katsu Saimin, Hawaiian BBQ Beef Saimin or Fried Shrimp Saimin
- Pork Lau
