Nearly a year ago, I was lucky enough to spend almost two months in the Philippines, eating my way around Metro Manila and some neighboring provinces. My family and friends brought me to new and old eating places because they knew it was something I’d really go for. It seems a waste not to share the great food from that trip, which is why I started Food Flashbacks in this blog. After all, one of the things I love and miss about the Philippines is the food. Mind you, Food Flashbacks will not focus exclusively on food in the Philippines, but it’s a good starting point.
Today’s Food Flashback? Breakfast at Antonio’s in Tagaytay City.
Breakfast at Antonio’s in Tagaytay City became one of my favorites after going there for brunch with my mom and youngest sister. From the moment we entered until we left, service was impeccable. I loved the laid-back and serene atmosphere of the place. The all-white interior made a spacious restaurant feel even more spacious, if that’s at all possible. Their menu wasn’t just Filipino food. They also have pancakes, waffles, roesti, crepes, omelettes, frittatas, sandwiches, pizza and pasta.
Before eating, I ordered this lovely pot of tea.
I had longganisa with egg and fried rice, their version of longsilog. At that time, I just came from the U.S. and haven’t eaten longsilog in a long time.
My mom ordered tapa with scrambled egg and fried rice (yep, tapsilog!).
My sister ordered this dish served with hash brown and house made toast. I can’t remember what it was.
The ambiance was perfect. It’s one of those places where you pay good money for food and everything else that comes with it. Sure, we can order longganisa and tapa way cheaper elsewhere. But seriously, if I can view a distant volcano from where I’m sitting, I’m perfectly willing to pay. Hubby and I have eaten in overpriced restaurants with crappy locations and uninviting views before. At least Breakfast at Antonio’s throws you a bone with views of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake.
I have to admit, I found the maid uniforms of the food servers particularly amusing. They make you feel like it’s your house and the maids/servers are there to serve you. In fact, they were so attentive that it seemed like they couldn’t do enough to please us during our visit.
Most importantly, their restrooms were clean. This one is a deal-breaker for me when eating out, especially in expensive restaurants. Nothing is more annoying than shelling out cash for fine dining, only to find a filthy restroom. Yuck. Thankfully, Breakfast at Antonio’s was clean, clean, clean.
I didn’t get to take pictures of the restaurant interiors, but it’s on their website. It’s a lovely place that I’m absolutely going back to the next time I visit the Philippines. I truly hope that their food, service and ambiance haven’t changed by then.
